Abstract
Methanol extracts of fresh tissues of Mazzard (P. avium) and Mahaleb (P. mahaleb) were examined for phenolic composition. Two sweet cherry rootstocks were differed especially in three phenolic groups; phenolic acids, coumarins and flavonoids. Mazzard contained p-coumaric acid, o-coumaric acid, caffeic acid, p-coumarylquinic acid and chlorogenic acid, whereas Mahaleb contained o-coumaric acid. Mahaleb tissues were rich in coumarin and herniarin, which were absent in Mazzard. Three flavonoids, dihydrowogonin, kaempferol and quercetin, were found in Mazzard. Mahaleb, however, contained only kaempferol. These differences in phenolic composition between two rootstocks were discussed in relation to graft-incompatibility.
